Sunscreen

What to look for, what is available locally and internationally, and how to access government-supported supply through NASSP.

What to look for

SPF 50+

Anything below SPF 30 is not adequate for skin without melanin.

Broad spectrum

Must cover UVA as well as UVB. Look for the wording on the label.

Water resistant

Matters in heat and during work or sport, but still needs reapplying.

Volume

Daily full-body use gets through a tube quickly. Cost per month is the number that matters.

NASSP

The National Albinism Sunscreen Support Programme

NASSP provides sunscreen support through participating government hospitals. For many people it is the difference between protection being a monthly expense and protection being possible at all.

UVSafe's job here is navigation: which hospitals participate, what to bring, who to ask for, and what to do if you are turned away.

Before you go

  • Documents required
  • Registration process
  • Frequency of collection
  • Cost, if any
  • Who to contact if supply has run out

Confirm these details with the Ministry of Health and NCPWD before publishing, wrong guidance sends someone on a wasted journey.
