Most people's only exposure to albinism is a news story about violence.
A festival puts a different picture in the same public square.
There is a culture of albinism, and it is not a medical one. It is the
hat somebody chose rather than the hat they were given. It is a set
played to a full room. It is the way a group of friends arranges
itself for a photograph so the light is behind them. None of that
appears in a policy brief, and all of it changes what a stranger
expects to see.
So once a year we take the whole argument outdoors and let people
attend it rather than read it. Music, fashion, sport, food, a
microphone handed to the person who is usually described instead of
asked. Everything else we do across the year is easier afterwards,
because thousands of people have already met us on a good day.
Awareness is a weak thing to ask for on its own. So each
edition carries one specific claim, and the whole day is built
around making that claim impossible to ignore.
What a day holds
Four things happen every year, whatever the theme is.
The runway
Members walk in four categories. It started in 2023 and it has been
the heart of the day ever since.
The pitch
A match, mixed squads, players with and without albinism on the same
side. Sport is where the audience stops watching and starts cheering.
The stage
Music, spoken word and a DJ booth run by members. Talent from the
community, booked rather than invited to observe.
The clinic
Sunscreen, skin checks and information, on site and free, because the
crowd we most want to reach is already standing there.
Since 2023
Four categories, and each one is an argument.
The runway is not decoration. A category is a claim about
where persons with albinism belong, worn rather than written.
01
Protective wear
Long sleeves, wide brims, closed weaves and a high collar, cut so that nobody has to choose between covering their skin and looking like they want to be seen. The most practical category on the card, and the one the audience did not expect to applaud.
02
African dress
Our own cloth on our own bodies. The category answers a quiet assumption that albinism sits outside African identity rather than inside it.
03
Professional wear
The interview suit, the office dress, the thing you wear into the room where somebody decides whether to hire you. Walking it is a claim about where we expect to be working.
04
Evening wear
Glamour, without apology and without explanation. A category that exists because joy does not have to be justified.
Designers and tailors who want to dress a category, and members who want to
walk one, are both welcome. The call opens each year in the spring.
The record
Five editions, one argument.
Pick a year.
2026
Celebrating the day through fitness
Training early, training late, training covered, training in company. A body that has to hide from the middle of the day still has to be moved, and the 2026 edition made that an ordinary, public thing.
7 photographs from the 2026 edition.
2025
Celebrating albinism named as a disability in Kenyan law
Being named in law changes what a person can claim and what an institution owes them. The 2025 edition was a celebration of a sentence in a statute, which is a strange thing to dance about until you have waited for it.
10 photographs from the 2025 edition.
2024
Ten years of International Albinism Awareness Day
A decade of the day. The 2024 edition took stock in public: what ten years had changed, and what it had not.
15 photographs from the 2024 edition.
2023
Celebrating the day through climate action and the runway
Two things that look unrelated until you have albinism: a sun getting stronger, and the right to be looked at on your own terms. This is the edition that gave us the runway.
10 photographs from the 2023 edition.
2022
Celebrating the day through sport and political participation
The first one. Sport and political participation for persons with disabilities in the same frame, because a person who is welcome on a pitch is a person expected in the room where decisions are made.
9 photographs from the 2022 edition.
13 June 2027
The sixth edition, and the first one outside Nairobi.
Five editions have proved the format in one city. The next thing to
prove is that it travels. The plan for 2027 is one main Nairobi day
plus county editions run by community representatives, using the same
four elements and the same standard, so that a person in Kisumu or
Kakamega or Mombasa does not have to come to the capital to be part
of it.
Three things we are working on now, in order: a written playbook any
county team can run from, a protective wear collection from the runway
that can actually be bought, and a partner for the clinic so the
sunscreen and the skin checks are guaranteed rather than arranged
each year from nothing.
The theme for 2027 is not set. It is chosen with the
community rather than announced to it, and this page will carry it as
soon as it is.
What we are planning
One Nairobi day. The main edition, the runway, the match,
the stage and the clinic.
County editions. Smaller days run locally on or near 13
June, to one shared standard.
A playbook. Published, free, so any group anywhere can
run one without asking us first.
A collection. Protective wear from the runway, made to
be worn rather than photographed.
Dates, venue and theme are confirmed closer to the
day. Nothing here is a commitment we have not made internally.
Take part
Three ways in, and all three of them are open now.
One afternoon reaches people a year of campaigning does not.
A festival is the cheapest serious audience we have. It is
also the one place where a brand can stand next to this community without
it looking like charity.
What a sponsor gets
Presence at the day itself, naming on a category or an element, a
photograph set you are free to use, and a short written account of
what the edition did, with real numbers rather than impressions.
What we will not do
We do not sell access to members, we do not stage anybody for a
photograph, and no image of a person goes anywhere without that
person's recorded consent. Those are not negotiable and they are the
reason the photographs look like this.
What it costs
It depends on the element and the year, so there is no price list
here that would be out of date by spring. Ask and you get a real
number for the thing you are actually interested in.
